The Sinking Ship of Armenia
By Prof. Mahmut Esat Ozan
The Turkish Forum
The following was written by Prof. Mahmut Esat Ozan, a well-known
anti-Armenian and anti-Greek propagandist of Turkish descent who currently
lives in Florida. His letter was addressed to every single member of the
European Parliament.
A BOTTOMLESS PIT OF HATRED
In France last week, an "Action Alert" issued by the Armenian National
Committee of Europe indicated that The Government of Turkey Must Recognize
the Armenian "Genocide." Emboldened by the decision of the French Parliament,
the Armenian organizations launched a strong campaign to upset Turkey's
chances of joining the European Union. They claim that Turkey has to face
the historical reality which will help move that nation (Turkey) towards the
process of democratization. There is also a passage in which the Armenians
urge the government of Turkey to stop implementing a "failed" eight-year policy of blockading Armenia. There are those in the Armenian circles who believe that this blockade is used by Turkey to make Armenia retreat from their efforts to secure international recognition of the Armenian "Genocide." The Armenians are halfway correct in their assessment. The Turkish blockade serves another point. It serves for the Armenians to think twice before deciding that they are occupying 20 % of the Azeri land mass which they annexed in 1993 after the cruel war they initiated with
midnight raids where they slashed the throats of more than 5000 innocent men,
women, and children while they slept in their beds. They will never accept the
fact that they are guilty of causing over one million Azeri refugees who have been living under the most inhuman conditions ever witnessed anywhere in the world.
"SOS" FROM THE SHIP OF ARMENIA
If it were not for Mehmet Melih Oskay's meticulous research, and the presentation of sources he selects, we would be at a loss in understanding
the real situation which exists today in that land-locked resource-craving
tiny so-called Republic which has reputedly sold its soul to Vladimir Putin's bankrupt Russia This is a country which cannot even feed its own people properly. However, Robert Kocharian and his murderous cohorts try to govern this miserably poor country, riddled with corruption, mismanagement and terrorism. According to the reports alluded to earlier, after nine years of "independence" from the Soviet Union, Armenia today is much more dependent on Russia than ever before. More than two million of the population has been lost due to migration. Like the rats fleeing the sinking ships, these millions have fled to Georgia, Turkey, Iran, and Russia. The median income is so pitifully small, that it is not surprising to find university
lecturers cleaning bathrooms for less than five dollars a week. There are more than
30,000 Armenian refugees who crossed the border and came to Turkish cities
to feed their empty stomachs and perhaps save a few Turkish Liras to send home. Russia does not require a visa for the Armenians, so a great deal of them have relocated to Russian cities where life is relatively better, but not much more. The Kocharian government has donated close to one half of its territory to Russia. Russia, in turn, transferred and re-distributed the old and obsolete military hardware from Georgia to Armenia. It is an indisputable fact that the Armenian stance is upsetting U.S. foreign policy efforts to stabilize the Caucasus region.
ARMENIA SOLD ITS SOUL
There is no political stability in Armenia today. The country is still suffering from the savage assassinations, which took place a year ago in October when a bunch of terrorist gunmen killed Prime Minister Vazgen Sarkisian, and 7 other members of the Armenian Parliament. Many think that a transition to democracy and to market economy will not be realized as long as the shortsighted hate-mongering policies of Robert Kocharian remain the agenda of the country. There was a time the predecessor of Kocharian, a level-headed reformist called Levon Ter-Petrossian, was the President.
He had the right idea of disassociating himself and his family from the despicable ASALA and the Dashnak elements. He even made overtures to the
Turkish government that Armenia and Turkey could set aside the bitterness of
the past and live as neighbors. To reward his thoughts, Ankara was considering to allocate the Black Sea port of Trabzon solely to Armenian trade with the outside world. But, as it was intimated above, the reactionary and terrorist elements in the country saw to it that their man Robert Kocharian got a hold of the reigns of this backward, resource- and raw materials-challenged place so that he could continue to govern the country with his hapless and hopeless ideas. Kocharian had to sell his soul not to the proverbial "devil" but to someone as close to him as possible, the
ex-KGB apparatchik Vladimir Putin. This way he hoped to prosper and grow and
thus perpetuate the atmosphere of hatred, which is necessary for his country's
survival.
IMAGINATION OUT OF FOCUS
The famous American writer Mark Twain said the following once: "You cannot depend on your judgment when your imagination is out of focus." Truly
Robert Kocharian's imagination is not only out of focus, it is hopelessly clouded.
The country is being propped up by generous yearly U.S. help to the tune
of hundreds of millions of U.S. taxpayers dollars and another $300 to 400 million
dollars sent home by Armenians living in the United States of America.
The never-ending dispute and unresolved war tension with its neighbor
Azerbaijan has been preventing Armenia from even thinking of future prosperity.
Some refugee in Turkey who wanted to be anonymous to a Turkish journalist
complained about his country and called it a "sink hole." Someone whose
name I could borrow from the Oskay report is of Anahit Gjulbudaghian, a 27-
year-old Armenian woman in Yerevan, She says, "We wanted more land, but now all of our lands are empty." I can easily tell that her family was from Turkey originally. I say that because Gjul or Gul in Turkish means "rose." Her full name could be translated into English as a "knotty rose plant." Anyway, if she were not from Turkey, her name "Rose" would had to be "Vart," because that is how one says "rose" in Armenian.
ARMENIA MISSED THE CULTURE TRAIN
Instead of forsaking the past conflicts it had with the now defunct Ottoman
Empire and letting the alleged Genocide to be decided by the proper authorities; i.e., the historians, the Kocharian government has been doing the opposite. The Anatolia News Agency reports from the Thracian Turkish city of Edirne that a new rapprochement among the regional countries is under way.
A "Culture Train" has been instituted to promote peace among neighbors.
The "Culture Train" has visited, so far, cities in Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Greece, and has toured the aforementioned areas under the banner of "The Interparliamentary Friendship Group," and returned back to Kapikule Train Station in the northwestern province of Edirne after visiting the birthplace of Kemal Ataturk, in Salonica, Greece and the battlefields of "Plevne" or Plovdiv, as it is known in Bulgaria today. This new development is good for any country in that immediate location. However, it is truly a shame that, this year, no Armenian participation was possible, because a change in the status quo for Armenia is not something possible, as long as Robert Kocharian lives comfortably in his residence in Yerevan, Armenia
and is subsidized by the infamous Armenian lobby supported by U.S. Congressmen
who'd do anything for an Armenian vote, and the followers of the "GENOCIDE.COM" enterprise consisting of hundreds of thousands of
misguided Armenians who inhabit large population centers of America and collect
and spend astronomical monies for bribes and other illegal arm twisting to achieve their phony cause.
FRANCE PASSES THE ALLEGED GENOCIDE BILL
A friend of mine, Murat, who lives in Nancy, France answered my few
questions on the "Bill" in question. Here's what he reported from France:
"While the amount of Turks living in France today is almost equal to the
Armenians, it is always the Armenians who are visible and vociferous everywhere. During the parliamentary deliberation they had completely filled the galleries, the only areas spectators are allowed. Turks had to listen to the procedures standing in the corridors and outside of the building.
The passage of this bill is not regarded to be lethal for the Turkish-French
relations. Even the friendship football (soccer) game to be played in Istanbul soon has not been canceled or even postponed by Ankara."
ONE LAST WORD
The grapevine has it that even though the country is bankrupt economically,
and more than one half of the Armenian population has fled the country for a
better life somewhere else, the Kocharian government has been spending millions and millions of U.S. dollars to organize anti-Turkish summer camps for the Armenian youngsters, lectures, seminars, symposia for the college-age ones, and [the Armenian state] wastes its meager resources in exploring xenophobic activities and nefarious propaganda.
I shall try to translate carefully a Turkish proverb which is very appropriate here to describe the situation in which Armenia finds itself today:
The proverb says:
"He who does not even have 'ayran' [tahn] to drink, insists on being carried to
the bathroom in a plush sedan chair." Ayran is a diluted form of yogurt and,
for the sedan chair, you need the services of at least two "footmen." Good luck, Robert Kocharian, you deserve the best.
