The Secret of Our Failure
By Ara Baliozian
Like all imperial powers, the Turks have been in the divide-and-rule business for centuries. I have every reason to suspect that what divides us today is not this or
that religious dogma or political ideology or social agenda (assuming anyone is aware of their existence) but Ottoman strategy. After 600 years of indoctrination, we have not yet shaken off old habits; we continue to think with the old brain and we conduct our affairs as if we were on automatic pilot.
Let us hope that one of these days our leaders will recover their senses and discover the benefits of solidarity.
Who knows, some day they may even discover the tactical advantages of exploiting the support of friendly Turks (who may well be half-Armenian). If, so far, they have failed to do so, it may be because for them and for Armenians in general (including myself), the Turks don't exist, only the Turk: a single entity
with a single mind, a single goal, and a single yataghan. Which also means Armenians don't exist, only the Armenian: a single entity with a single mind (if you will forgive the overstatement), a single goal, and a single mortal wound.
