AMAA Spreads Christmas Joy to Children of Armenia and Karabagh
PARAMUS, NJ - For the past several years, the Armenian Missionary Association of America (AMAA) has celebrated Christmas with a series of children's programs throughout Armenia and Karabagh. The project is inspired by the vision of the late Rev. Dr. Movses Janbazian, Executive Director of the AMAA, who stressed
that the Good News of the birth of Jesus Christ brings hope even to the poorest and most desperate in Armenia. "Heavenly visions are not like visions created by human beings," he wrote. "Heavenly visions are like the Word of God; they last as long as the Heavens...The contrast of the Heavenly visions with the reality of the world underscores the miserable condition of mankind, and especially children."
This year, more than 30,000 children and their parents will attend AMAA
Christmas programs in Armenia, Karabagh and Georgia. The programs include
choir recitations, a dramatic depiction of the nativity, a playlet underscoring Christian themes, and a festive celebration of our Armenian heritage. The program is supervised by scores of local staff and volunteers, headed by Rev. Rene Leonian, AMAA Representative in Armenia, Mr. Harout Nercessian, AMAA Deputy Representative, and Ms. Tamar Vasoyan, AMAA Christian Education Coordinator in Armenia.
In the United States, this AMAA program has been supported through the
tireless efforts of a committee headed by Mrs. Lucy Janjigian. Her committee,
and a group of volunteers, have collected gift items and monetary donations
to make these Christmas programs possible. They have assembled thousands of
"Christmas Joy" packages to be distributed to children. Each package contains
toys, school supplies and personal hygiene articles. Those wishing to become
a Santa to an Armenian child may send their tax-deductible contributions,
earmarked for "Christmas Joy," to the AMAA, 31 West Century Road, Paramus,
New Jersey 07652. Each $5 donation will make one "Christmas Joy" package.
