Fire Destroys Roof of Opera House in Yerevan

YEREVAN, Dec. 27 (ArmenPress) - A fire broke out today at 7:10 a.m. in the Armenian National Opera House. According to officials, the fire destroyed about 1,700 square meters of the roof.

Police officers guarding the opera building from outside were the first to inform the fire brigade which arrived at the spot in five minutes. A total of 18 fire trucks were involved in the operation. The fire was brought under control at 9:10 a.m. and completely put out.

Officials have refrained from expressing opinions about what might have caused the fire. A senior fire brigade official said the results of the investigation would be clear in 10-15 days.

A city council official said the fire would not hinder a number of New Year and Christmas celebrations originally planned to be held in the opera building.

No injuries were reported.
