By Armine Minassian
WOODSIDE, NY - A musical afternoon was presented by the exceptionally talented young pianist, David Allahverdian, in the Avedissian Hall of the Armenian Center here on November 5, sponsored by the "Mayr" Chapter of the Armenian Relief Society.
This program was one of many presented this year in various parts of the US and Canada in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Armenian Relief Society. This women's organization has not only come to the aid of Armenians in need throughout the world, both financially and morally, but also supported the preservation and development of Armenian culture.
Words of welcome were spoken by Goharik Davidian, chairlady of ARS "Mayr" chapter. Speaking on behalf of the ARS was Anayis Cholakian, while Anahid Ugurlayan introduced the guest artist.
Five years ago, David Allahverdian was dubbed "Our Little Mozart" by the New York subway riders who heard him perform. Now he is a handsome 17-year-old endowed with exceptional talent.
David Allahverdian was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 1983. His aptitude and innate talent for music was revealed at a very young age. It was immediately encouraged by his parents who were both physicians and accomplished musicians. They enrolled him at the age of five in the Special Music School of Gifted Children of the State Conservatory of Tashkent.
The Allahverdian family emigrated to the United States and settled in New York in 1994. In order to expose and develop his musical proclivity, David began playing classical music on keyboard in subway stations - a practice which he continues weekly even at present - bringing joy to the riders.
Several national papers and magazines, including the New York Times, New York Magazine and the German Die Woche, have written about David, referring to him as "a miraculous talent . . . a genius." His teacher, concert pianist Seymour Lipkin, played a major role in preparing him to pass the entrance examinations at The Juilliard School of Music. "Of course, there would be no question whether he belongs in there," said Lipkin. After studying at Juilliard for one year, David won an honors recital competition, playing Shostakovich. This accomplishment enabled him to receive a scholarship from a non-profit philanthropic group. More recently, he beat out 10 other young finalists for a spot as soloist for Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Pre-College Symphony..
At present, David Allahverdian is a junior at La Guardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts. He has made numerous appearances in New York State, including the Lincoln Center Festival.
This program at the Armenian Center featured works by Rouben Grigorian, Beethoven, Liszt, Schubert, Ravel, Chopin, A Spendarian, Schumann, and A. Khachaturian. It was received with awe and admiration by the audience.
The ARS "Mayr" chapter expressed its appreciation to David by presenting him with a financial gift and a plaque.
A reception followed the successful concert.
