Medical Outreach Completes Major Project in Armenia

Medical Outreach Board members and friends with His Eminence Archbishop Barkev MardirossianYEREVAN, Armenia - October 9, 2000 was a day of jubilation at the Military-Trauma Hospital on Mouratzan Street in Yerevan. It was the grand opening of the main building of the hospital and the two wings on the first floor -- the officers' and pilots' quarters. This remodeled hospital with 450 beds was furnished with modern medical and surgical equipment and furniture.

Present at the opening were Defense Minister Serge Sarkissian, his deputy Arthur Aghabegian, Chairman of Medical Outreach Dr. Vartkes Najarian and his wife Mary, Zori Balayan, Archbishop Barkev Mardirossian, parents of the late Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsian, Zaven and Gretta Sargsian. Also present on this special occasion were donors to this project; Anooshavan and Helen Jallalian, Laurel Karabian, Cindy Norian and Nancy Arabian from Los Angeles, Sona Boghosian from New York, Dr. John Autian from Tennessee, and Melcita Mouradian from Moscow.

Dr. Najarian invited all donors to the platform and expressed his gratitude to those who had supported this project with their donations. He was happy that they were present to witness the fruits of their gifts. "This was a mission impossible in 1995 when we started with the late Prime Minister Mr. Vazgen Sargsian but with his constant encouragement and the support of the Diaspora it become possible."

For this renovation project, Medical Outreach spent $546, 375.27 for labor, construction material, operating-room equipment, hospital furniture and technology.

In addition, since 1996, Medical Outreach has sent 22 forty-foot containers, 36 twenty-foot containers, and 29 shipments through United Armenian Fund - valued at $15, 276, 333.71. Dr. Najarian expressed special thanks to Sarkis Acopian and family from Easton, PA, who undertook the renovation of the seventh- and eighth-floor amphitheater and the roof of the hospital. He thanked the following as well: Cafesjian family for remodeling the officers' quarters and the hospital greenhouse; the Jallalian family for bringing water to the hospital and donating the water fountain with chilling unit; the Lincy Foundation for its continued support of Medical Outreach's activities, dating back to the pre-1988 earthquake period; Dr. and Mrs. Joseph and Angele Bahuth for their co-sponsorship in remodeling the officers' quarters; Brother to Brother of Tempe, Arizona; International Aid of Springfield, Michigan; USAID of Washington, DC; and, finally, some 75 individuals, families and organizations who donated $1,000 - $10,000 towards this project (see accompanying list). Beautiful bronze plaques have been placed in their names, or in memory of their loved ones, at the entrance of patient rooms.

"This was a project my son had his heart in. I am sorry that he is not here to witness the joy. Now the soldiers are going to sleep in clean and comfortable beds. They will have modern technology for treatment. I hope that there will be no war and this hospital will be empty and if patients come, let them come to rest and recuperate. My son did not have any children, you are my children and grandchildren. The country depends on you to protect and safeguard it."

Mr. Zori Balayan took the stand and thanked the Diaspora for supporting such a major project. He thanked Dr. and Mrs. Vartkes Najarian for visiting Karabagh during the heavy shelling of Stepanakert and operating on hundreds of wounded soldiers. He thanked Medical Outreach for building and furbishing two modern operating rooms and the thirty-bed hospital.

Keynote speaker at opening was Minister of Defense Serge Sarkissian.Mr. Serge Sarkissian, Minister of Defense, took the podium and, on behalf of all the military and the government of Armenia, thanked the Najarians and all the benefactors. He said, "I remember in 1990 when Vazgen Sargsian and I were sending our brothers and sisters to the front lines, they understood that they had to fight using little ammunition, they had to fight without uniforms, they had to fight without food, but they had two very important requests: one was a communications system, and the other was medical help. And the truth is that the Najarians played a major role in these two fields. We are forever indebted to them.

Today I would like to request that the Najarians come to Armenia and implement changes in our hospitals. Good technology and new facilities do not guarantee improvements in our health-care system. We have major problems in our administrative field and we hope that Dr. Najarian will not refuse our request and take over implementing the badly needed improvements."

Archbishop Barkev Mardirossian of Karabagh thanked the diasporan Armenians and the Najarians for the beautiful modern hospital that our boys deserve. He emphasized that this project strengthens the bond between the motherland and the Diaspora. He blessed the seventh and eighth floors of the hospital, the pilots' quarters, the officers' quarters and the water fountain in the courtyard.

The visitors toured the newly remodeled quarters. Later on they were invited to a reception hosted by Vartkes and Mary Najarian.
